Well, now I’m getting some damned peculiar PMs

15 Feb

I've been getting these PMs from people I don't know, which isn't really so weird as all that, but these have all got a similar "feel" to them, as well as a couple of common factors.

The first one was someone styling herself "Virgen", suggestively enough … and offering friendship. Which is not so terrible, but here's the fast break … she insisted that this be an email friendship, rather than one here, on MyOpera, via PMs. I thought that a bit strange, and I wasn't about to engage in anything like that so early in any relationship; it just sorta "smelled bad", if you know what I mean. So I said that I would prefer to confine it to PMs, at least for a while. Never heard another word.

Then I got this one:

You can see what I mean, I'm sure … the thing seems awfully intimate, though terms of address vary with culture, but the inclusion of an email address is certainly suggestive of some relationship between the two PMs.

And then, just today, I got this one:

Another, from a similar-sounding name and with basically the same sort of pitch to it.

Now, much as I love to be thought fascinating by women, it does strike me as odd that the women who choose to find me fascinating want to take the "friend" relationship outside MyOpera, and into email. And right away, too … no exploratory communication first.

And what I find even more puzzling is that I cannot figure out what they hope to gain from it all. They can read that I'm married (somewhere, I think), my blog entries sometimes mention that I've never had any money to speak of (from my income level, you have to look UP, for quite a while, to see the Poverty Line, although several people looking at once can see it faster), and that I'm maybe not a freakin' genius, but I'm not stupid, so I know enough not to tell them my bank account numbers or passwords or anything else like that, so what are they phishing for? (I'm sure they must be phishing for something.) Knowing my email address would allow them to spam me, but I really can't see the profit of trying to sell something to a man with no money OR prospects.

I'm buffaloed, and I admit it. Now, I used to have a neighbour who would explain these things to me (I'm not a good criminal; I can never see where these schemes are going, which is a good reason to stay honest, I think.), but he's moved away and I haven't seen him in years. So … can anyone out there give me some idea of what these people want?

Thanks …

Yes, I've received several of these. One was a proposal of marriage by a man who wanted to make me the happiest woman in the world. He said he could see it in my eyes that I needed him. I have since taken my picture off as an avatar and put my and my families' photos on 'friends' only. This guy was older but most of them are from younger guys. I always find it kind of funny when I visit their site to see who they are and he's 40 years younger than me. They usually don't have a blog or photos, but 20 pages of friends. I think several of the ladies here on Opera have received these kinds of things too.

Yes. They send a million of these and hope some guy with a higher testosterone-level than mine will take the bate.If the women here on Opera get them too, I am confident that it's a bot or something that's sending the stuff.

Oh, but if the ladies are receiving proposals from men and men from ladies – then I am wrong in assuming this is the work of an automated process I guess?

Well, one would think so … especially since the soi-disant "Virgen" actually engaged me in a short spate of PMs … she was the only one who gave a location … Cuba, where she was a "profesora de art". Yeah, right.Possibly trying to gain entrance to the US via a "romantic" relationship?Oh, well …Как очень странное, as the Russians say.Man, was that a bear to type in! Russian bear, I suppose, LOL. Have to keep looking up where the damn characters are. I'll hafta get some stickers.

How very strange indeed.I assume these people will have to search for quite some time before someone takes the bait. I think of myself as a normal sort of person – and I am in no way whatsoever tempted.

I suppose you're right … I know that people engaged in sales as a means of making a living always say that in situations where one approaches "cold" prospects, the ratio is around 99:1.

Thanks for the input, Zak … I figured it had to be something like that … a sort of reverse-English variant of the perennial appeals from Nigeria and other countries in the Bight to help them get their money out of the country.I understand they still get enough return on investment to keep them at it. That's really the hardest part to understand … how people can be so bloody thick to fall for it, when the word's been out for many years. As they said about GWB, "How can he be so thick, with only one head?".

i got contacted the same way by three young women from Ghana during the course of last summer, according to each one of them i was what they were looking for in a man, they had look at my profile and yes, i was the one, yeah right, i'm 56 years old and a young 20-25 years old woman from Ghana will jump on my lap, yeah sure, anyway, the three of them were looking for a husband, i played the game for a while, one of them got really steamy in her e-mails, another one sent me a "proof" of her passport, and of course each one of them sent me a photo of herself (if it was actually them on the photos, and nice looking girls nevertheless), the catch was: i had to send 500 $ to take care of the immigration papers or whatever, one even got it down to 300 $ when i refused, screw that, i'm not doing anything financial online, period,so that was it, then recently, about a month ago, two women from Cuba sent me each a PM and then switched to e-mail, each one of them wants to be my friend, one sent me a beautiful and glittering picture of a fairy-like lady (picture i traced back to a Cuban site with TinEye, a Reverse Image Search Engine ), the other one thinks i'm a sexy man and both want to know everything about me, yeah, young women from all over the world are falling for me, sure,by the way, the three Ghana girls have been banned from Opera and one of the Cuban girl as well, so i guess someone somewhere on Opera knows a thing or two about these things…

I also get these PM's all the time. Most of them are from women, who "finds my profile interesting", regardless that it doesn't really say anything about me. 🙄

Lately I`ve got a lot of these, many of them from Ghana, and all of them have read my profile and found me to be the perfect woman for them. Well, perfect I am :queen: , but it says clearly in my profile that I am living with my boyfriend. None of them has a blog or photos (exept one, who had hundreds of photos of himself), but as PainterWoman said, many pages of friends. And they always include e-mail adresses.

On behalf of the women in the world, I feel very embarrassed that there are such unblushing ones among us. :furious: Please don't think they are the majority of us.For myself, I don't use my own photo as an avatar in order to avoid these troubles. The photos of my family are allowed to only friends. Does ot go to extremes?

No, they are not the majority of women, those unblushing ones. The same as the men who do it, they are not the majority either. But whatever the media, there will always be those who try to profit shamelessly from it.

Is life always like that? The good and the bad always go together!

You do make one error: you assume ppl spamming through my.opera have enough braincells to understand that what they do is stupid.
