Sorry to report …

23 Apr

All the computers in my house are currently hors de combat from the action of some virus which got into the network and attacked the operating systems. I am down at least until the 3rd of May, when I can order a new computer. Things had been approaching this point for some time … the computer I use is easily ten years old, and when M’Soft decided to disown XP, it became pretty obvious that any extensive repairs were not really cost-effective.

I am currently hustling back and forth to the local Public Library, trying to keep up with the emails that keep piling up. I dump most of them, and when I get back there are ten or twenty more awaiting my attention. Thank God for an 8GB flash drive!

I fully expect to be back in business by the first half of May. Thanks for your visits.

Cheers!

Imagine that you are deprived of the Internet for several months, i think you hate to do so . i think now are passing a simplified pattern of an experience that I had before .

The same may be happening to me soon. My pc is from 2006 I think. It got a virus six months ago and I had to take it in. Doesn’t seem to matter if you have current virus protection or not. Norton did not catch it. The pc guy said I was on borrowed time. I really don’t like the idea of using my daughter/sil pc, even though they both have a lap top and don’t use the desk one much. Not that I have anything really secretive to say, I still wouldn’t like the idea of them being able to see everything that I say or do. I have XP too. I’m debating on whether or not to get a lap top. Not sure what to do but I’ll have to use this one till it implodes I guess. I may be having car repairs sooner.

My advice would be to use the standard ‘Microsoft Security Essentials’, plus an excellent product called ‘Malwarebytes’, plus a decent firewall/intrusion product (Comodo is my recommendation) and a virtual C drive product (Returnil is as good as any), should you consider exploring online. Most or all of this is free, and in combination, so much better than the bloated so called Anti Virus products such as Norton, AVG etc. that Joe public are generally fooled into using by the high street vendors.

You could try bypassing Windows by booting on a Puppy Linux Live CD. ➡ http://puppylinux.com/cd-puppy.htm

Bleedin’ chip failed … nothing would work quite right, even after a reformatting and fresh OS. Bloody hell! This is a brand-new (actually it’s Brand “X”) built for me by my kid. who’s kinda good at that sort of thing. So am I. actually, but not with relatively advanced tech stuff. But I’m a better workman than he is. Anyway, I’m using Windas 7, 64-bit, and it is FAST! Dual-core chip, and all that. Lots of quirks to work out, but it’s pretty exciting.
    And frustrating.
I’m trying to use Opera 11-something, and places are all screaming at me to update my browser, but I just plain don’t like 20 … it’s virtually useless to me. So, here I am, writing on IE, of all things … and having a damnably difficult time of signing in here … I get my dashboard, not my front page. Anyone have any ideas about this?
    Good to be back.
