This is Allan Vestergård Nielsen, an excellent photographer and a great friend. He passed away on February 1, 2010, and I miss his gentle decency every day. We never touched hands, but he touched my heart. I raise a glass of Gløgg to him, wherever he is, and I’m sure that many of his MyOpera friends will do the same.
Skål, Allan!

Seeing that photo makes me both happy and sad. Allan touched a lot of us.

As I’m sure you know, Allan was a dear personal friend to me. He also introduced me to the MyOpera community. He was there when I married my wife five years ago and took some extraordinary pictures at the event. We would often take wlaks both in Aarhus, where he lived, and in my town, when he came visiting us, talking ’bout all sorts of things like friends do. I went to see him quite a few times when he was at the hospital, in his last days.
I miss him.

We all miss him, whether we had personal contact or not. He had that rare gift of being able to tell you who he was and what he was about, even over the internet.

Thanks for this about Allan. He was a fan of my art and poetry and said so many interesting, introspective and thought provoking things. I copied comments from old opera posts where he was part of the discussion. Didn’t get them all, unfortunately. Besides being able to tell you who he was, he also told you a bit about yourself. Maybe that came from his background of working with children. We are all still children in some ways.

I barely knew the man, having only spoken once or twice at most. But I saw him around and he was always pleasant to everyone. You notice these things and they stay with you, even about relative strangers.

Yes, Mari, he loved to take pictures. He was good enough to be a professional, which he was, in his free time.
