Up until a few days ago, we in the Milwaukee area had virtually no snow. North and South of us, yes. Not a lot, but enough that one could guess that one wasn't in some kind of time warp, or had somehow gotten left out of the Universe. But here? None, save a slight dusting at separated intervals. It's the same "dry" pattern we had last year, both Winter and Summer. The big drought was another feature of it … the jet streams have got disarranged, and who knows when (or if) they'll ever come back. Climate change is gettin' scary. On December 18, we had a wee bit, and I thought that maybe the dry spell had broken:
The snow was still falling, which is why the picture has an odd look.
Well, the short of it is, that was all we had until three days ago … no precipitation for a good month and a half, and this in one of the snowiest, rainiest places in the continental US.
Then, last Friday, it finally snowed! This isn't what we'd have called a real storm, five or ten years ago, but I get the feeling that this is the kind of "big snow" that we're going to be getting used to. Maybe six inches, tops, and it wouldn't surprise me if this were all we got for the season. A few pics:
I'll post these, and some others in a new little album called "February 8, 2013". Feel free to look.
Cheers, all …

Glad that you have had some wet – if frozen – stuff from the sky. Beautiful photos, as always.

It sure stops here! When we first came here, we had snow, and lots of it, but now we hardly get any.

One of my friends asked me few days ago if we were affected with that huge snow storm on the east. Then I showed him a photo of a plum tree in a bloom. This is Vancouver. Enough said :left:

I never knew it until I started spending a couple of weekends in November, outdoors all day, coaching on the firing line at my club's annual Hunter's Sight-In Clinic. I felt much better! Even a cloudy day is much brighter outdoors than a supposedly well-lit house. So … if you're depressed by the darkness, get outdoors. There are also special light-boxes one can purchase for severe cases. And if all else fails … Fasching.

The snow has started again here, recovering the ground before the last lot had thawed. The snowdrops are in their natural element peeping out from amongst the snow, with the tips of the violets just emerging too.

Freya, your picture looks like a salad! It seems to have a greenish cast; maybe a little fiddling with the colour?Nice to see the snowdrops!

I see it as a blue tinge. I had a quick try, but it didn`t make much difference. The light was poor and perhaps I should have used a snow setting. I think the camera needs recalibrating.I like it when bare trees are lightly covered in snow, it retains the outline, but clothes them in white foliage.

Well, it's more snow than I've seen this winter (although the North Downs have had their usual amount, I think). Hope there will be enough to keep the rivers at a reasonable level in the spring.

The Great Lakes (American, not African) are something like 6+ feet below maximum. This is most unusual.

That is for sure!!! Considering that a significant amount of water comes from out in my neck of the woods, I'd guess part of the problem is the drought we have been having here in Western Canada on the East side of the Rocky Mountains. When one considers that they used to run river paddle wheelers on the Saskatchewan rivers in the 18th century, but not for about 100 years now, I'd guess that says something too. The future should answer some questions Mann….. 😛
