Some quick shots from the car …

17 May

No claim for great artistic quality is made for these; I had the opportunity as I was driving past the pond, referred to in my post and album called "Goings-on at the pond …", and spotted this … I'm sure you'll understand the difficulties of posing these subjects, which would be like trying to herd cats.
As a side note, the season seems rather more advanced than it is in the scepter'd isle, since our goslings are considerably bigger than those shown by Words. Of course, some allowance must be made for the fact that these buggers winter over, here, so they get a bit of a jump on things. Here they are, no more verbiage:

That's it, folks …
A later note: I've put these up in an album "Geese and Goslings, May 2012", so you can see them bigger, if you like.

Several clutches, I think, Words … geese seem to have a sort of babysitting coöp. There are other adults around, mostly on the silt island in the background.

I would never feed the geese. I've heard they can be mean. There's only a few lakes around here and they get totally frozen over. If I'm outside just at the right time, I can hear the birds, either honking or quacking… flying south for the winter, or coming back early spring. I think it's the geese that fly in a straight line, and the ducks in a V shape? No matter, I love seeing them and hearing them. Have seen two bald eagles and a pelican flying over the house too. The pelican sure was prehistoric looking.

Maybe there's not enough open water where you are to tempt them into wintering over. There sure is, here!Plus damned fools who feed them, which keeps them around … these are usually the same people that complain about the poop all over.I think if I were more into cooking large birds, I'd get a nice quiet airgun and collect a few, but there's only the two of us now. Goose is mighty fine eatin'.

Love these. So cute seeing the fuzzy babies.I only see flocks of the adults flying over the house twice a year.

The easiest way to tell them apart in the air is the speed of the wingbeats … ducks are faster. And of course, if they're talking back and forth, the "honk" is different from the "quack".Pelicans look like the pterodactyls in Jurassic Park.

"I'm sure you'll understand the difficulties of posing these subjects, which would be like trying to herd cats."The comment about herding cats reminded me of this – hope you enjoy it 😀
