Here it comes, folks!

21 Jun

Sumer is icumen in,

Lhude sing cuccu!

Groweþ sed and bloweþ med

And springþ þe wde nu,

Sing cuccu!

Awe bleteþ after lomb,

Lhouþ after calue cu.

Bulloc sterteþ, bucke uerteþ,

Murie sing cuccu!

Cuccu, cuccu, wel þu singes cuccu;

Ne swik þu nauer nu.

Pes:

Sing cuccu nu. Sing cuccu.

Sing cuccu. Sing cuccu nu!

OK, folks, for some really stupid reason, this damned software is refusing to accept "Enter" as a line ending, and that poem up there came out like prose. I even went back and put TWO "Enters" at the end of each line, and it still comes out like this.
If anyone has any ideas, I'm willing to listen.
!@*%$)@$(!

Read the "Comments" to find out why the above paragraph is no longer true.

try using <—br> (without the dashes of course) where you would normally put "enter"

OK … I'll try anything once … LOLIf that doesn't work, I'll type it out and print it, and then photograph it, so I've got a jpeg to paste in….HOT damn! It worked! Thanks, Squeak!Hmmm … any idea why that happened? I always thought "Enter" was basically "Return", as on old typewriters. (Even older typewriters didn't have "Return"; they had a big ol' lever that you pushed the carriage back with.)

sometimes when putting a video in a post, it helps to use the br coding due to the coding of the video. so if your return/enter doesn't work, always try the br coding. that is what i have to do when it don't work for me.glad my idea worked for you.

A simple poem telling of the changing season. It looks like Middle English, but I notice that it still has a runic thorn "þ" ? 🙂

  7. derWandersmann

    June 22, 2011 at 10:06 am

It is Middle English … the thorn was still in use at that time, but (as English has always been) not consistently. If a chap wanted to use it, he used it; if not, not. This is from a MS in the British Library:Mid-13th Century. It is interesting to note that the Latin gloss is a religious piece, quite different in spirit from the original.

out of curiosity, since I don't know Middle English, and can't read half the words up there, can you translate it into Modern English for me please…would appreciate it. Thanks.

No sooner said than done! This is a pickup; I can't say that I entirely agree with all the renderings, but WTF, I'm no expert.Summer has arrived,Loudly sing, Cuckoo! The seed grows and the meadow bloomsAnd the wood springs anew,Sing, Cuckoo! The ewe bleats after the lambThe cow lows after the calf. The bullock stirs, the stag farts,Merrily sing, Cuckoo!Cuckoo, cuckoo, well you sing, cuckoo;Don't you ever stop now,(The closest equivalent to "Pes." might be "Cho.", I think)Sing cuckoo now. Sing, Cuckoo.Sing Cuckoo. Sing cuckoo now!

Brussels sprouts aren't available in early summer, Red … and I think they'd like baked beans, but they're terrible at cooking. They'd much prefer cigarette tobacco. The buck farting is said to be interpreted pretty generally as a "gesture of virility", implying his ability to father fawns. The only thing I can say about that is that the rut doesn't occur until the fall, so that the does are pregnant through the winter, dropping their offspring in the most favourable time of the year. Therefore, gestures of virility would be of little use in the beginning of summer. It may be a little joke by some long-forgotten scribe.

You're entirely welcome, Teresa … I have thought of trying to learn some of those things, but, as you may have guessed, this old brain is so cluttered with things that have got lost in there over the years that anything new seems to slip in between other things and become lost. If it comes gradually, I might have a chance to get a grip on it and store it where I can find it again.

Thanks for your welcome! Hehe… I feel you derW until where I can of course. But you don't need to think so much about those things. You could just use your blog of notes (OMG I want you to know I'm learning your language and needing help with the daily vocab, Hehe! as you can see I'm doing my best in learning something new right now -exercise for my brain I guess)… I was talking about how you could use a memory help: using that Windows accesory called Notepad -that simple text editor located in 'all programs' in the Windows button. I use it all the time as a memory help. For it, I've attached it to the Taskbar ready to be used whenever I want. Ooops, excuse me dW for taking the liberty to suggest such a thing. 😮 :p

He could also send it to the desktop as a shortcut icon as well. That would help him for whenever he needed to remember something, he could just click/double click it and up it pops with a page ready to be written on.

Yes, yes, of course Kimberly! so sorry, how do you do! :DYou're terrible right -in the positive sense of this adjective. Look! He could do that (a shortcut icon in desktop) and using that Windows keyboard command: < the Windows start key* + d > to have an easier access to desktop. Easy, easy when you know how! :lol:I hope dW likes and wants to try something new. Hehe!(*) The Windows key – also known as the Super key, Meta key, Windows logo key, the WinKey, the Start key, MOD4, or the Flag key (sometimes shortened to Flag.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_key

well, I will say this, if he has any problems with Windows, he can always come to us for help. I been with Windows since 95, but I will say, I won't use Vista. Thats the most suckiest program of their's I have found.

You betcha, Squeak! I got my nice new HP Slimline with Vista in it, because they wouldn't let me have XP Pro. Well, it's a doorstop, now … Vista committed suicide and took the machine with it. I haven't got the lucre, filthy or otherwise, to get it fixed yet, and I can't do it myself because it cuts my hands up when I try to get things out … and I have small hands. Every pooter repair person I talk to says the same thing happens to them.I think I need a li'l drinkie.

+ 1 certainly… I've never understood that Vista. So I don't want it in my machine: in fact, I have in it a XP light version called "Element Edition", W7, and Ubuntu. BTW I'm trying right now that hybrid between Vista & XP called W7… I like it in some way but having serious troubles with my wireless card. What a mess! 😦

My son has W7 64-bit … he loves it, and my German friend says it's the most stable Windows she's ever seen.Personally, I think they would have done better sticking to Win 98 … I don't know anyone who didn't like it. We would have probably been to Version Eight or Nine by now. I'm still running it on an old 387 IBM that's being used for a letter-writing machine.

I'm glad I have my XP. If it weren't for being able to get a new comp with it on it, I don't think I would have gotten my Acer Aspire that I got a year ago. There are a lot of companies out there that will still sell a comp with XP on it, as a lot of people refuse to use the Vista.Microsoft killed themselves when they did Vista.

Money isn't the happiness source but how it helps! :DIn any case, money is for a protection. Therefore, the security feelings are really comfortable and what a relief for our hearts! So It's not strange but natural & proper that we feel down without it. You're not the one… my friend 🙂

I am no linguist but stag mating calls are coarse, short grunts. Not exactly charming but in a cold hard life with a sharp ending, mainly as food for everyone else, it obviously helps to have the foreplay of a vegetarian.

You can copy and paste a paragraph mark. Or enter it as a key board code.A lot of simple keyboard moves concern the CTRL key with the letters:Z X C and V.And:B, U and I etc., for documents. It really pays to learn them.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/126449

I'm using Vista not willingly as it is a laptop and the battery fails after 3 hours with it. The stuff Microbrain allows to phone home waxes my connection too.But it doesn't appear that different to XP apart from the fact I can play DVDs on the basic install. I still had to fetch a PDF reader, Java runtime and etc.Same old same old.

Lol, Mike. The true plob isn't cost. The real trouble is me. Indeed I have some distros at hand but I want to install one by myself. And booom! I've spoiled my Master Boot Record with that Canaima, the Venezuelan distro. Previously I had installed Ubuntu successfuly but switching to Canaima happened that crash.

If you have a restore disc or better, a full Windows CD installation disc, why not write to the local Linux companies in Venueseller and ask them for a distro they would specify for your set-up.Just tell them what make and model it is and that you would maybe like to keep the Microbuzzard on the nest and have a second boot option until you grow up?I bet it would cost less than the equivalent of a fiver. What money do you use over there? And how does it compare with Sterling and what can you buy with it?A fiver will get you 2 pints of beer, 3 or 4 loaves, 5 bags of sweets or bars of chocolate or 10 kilos of potatoes. You would need about 20 of them to pay the rent for a week in most places outside London. Or about 8 of them for a night in an hotel. It won't buy you a gallon of petrol. (A British gallon is about 4 1/2 litres.)I think the correct term for a mini-laptop is "tablet".

OOPS.Now I feel guilty.I have to admit that I never tried to put Linux on besides another distro till today and I failed.I usually let it have the whole shebang but I wanted to keep a Windows system available.I will have to write to a forum and ask how its done.I suggested getting one from the makers rather than a magazine issue as you can get one tailor made and it will still only cost about the same as a computer magazine.I have a few copies of old windows if you want one. I don't think they will cope with a tablet though. Check ut copyright laws where you are. Since you have the license to run a version of Microsoft it might be possible for you to run a Tiny version of it.I am inclined to believe that since there is material or financial damage involved to any party, I will get a version of Tiny Vista. I'd prefer Tiny XP or 7 but don't have that license on this computer.Tiny is one of the many bootleg versions they work the code backwards and re-engineer it to a more amenable (superior) standard and you get a whole lot more applications in a much smaller framework. It is ideal for a small computer. You can also get Tiny Linux editions. Even Tiny Linux Windows. Never seen them though. Do a search and search Venezuelan pages for the legality.http://myi4u.hubpages.com/hub/Windows-Tiny-Edition
