It seems we’ve had a little snow …

07 Feb

The big blizzard that we were promised actually did materialise this time. We were on the edge of it, so we only (!) got 18 inches (45-46 cm). That's a sizeable snowfall, not unknown here, but unusual. 90 miles south of us, in Chicago, they got 24 inches (~62 cm). The East Coast got blitzed, probably even more than we did. Of course, this was even more unusual, in that it was a "blizzard", which is defined as much by wind velocity as snowfall. Uh, … strike that "fall" from "snowfall" … it doesn't fall, it goes nearly horizontal, like bullets, and visibility is reduced to a few yards. There was no chance of taking pictures because of the lack of visibility and the harsh conditions, and it happened at night, to boot. All I could see from my windows was the window screens, totally clogged with snow and ice.
BUT … next morning, I managed to get a few. This is through the back door … notice the lack of any sort of path to the outside world …

And this is from the front door … it was evident that I wasn't going outdoors any time soon.

Other doors were similarly blockaded. But there were some really big, non openable windows at the corner where two wings of the building come together, and I got these from there. (BTW, if some of these seem to lack quality, please remember that I was, perforce, shooting through a heavy sheet of glass. I got as close as I could, to minimise stray dirt on the pane, and to avoid any distortion, but still, there must be some degradation of the image.)

A shot of the ornamental shrubs in the front of the building …

A shot from my window (I live on the upper storey; notice the height of the "sculptured" drifts on the windows of the lower storey) I took the clogged screen out and leaned out the open window; I was going to get that shot!

And the next day, the sun was out, the front door had been ploughed open, and I got outdoors with the old camera (the preceding pictures were shot with the Nikon; these are with the Olympus) …
This is my usual doorway; someone has started to try to open it, but has given up:

And the front door …

And back with the Nikon, next day … My usual doorway, opened up by someone with something bigger than a shovel:

And a shot of the wind sculptures …

And some icicles outside my window … First, as the light was bright enough:

They almost look like metal, don't they?
Then, as the light got brighter:

And then, as the sunlight actually touched them:

And they didn't last long, after that! LOL … I missed the melting … I had to eat breakfast; I felt like my blood glucose had gone negative! (It can't really do that.)
But, that's about it for now … Cheers, all!

Wow! Really impressive snow. I liked your photos very much.Since the first of December, I think we've only had a couple snow-free days. Our snow has been persistent, but never really deep (the snow drifts outside your back door were amazing).Last week we had some freezing rain on top of the snow. I watched as my poor, little birch tree was pulled over by the weight of the ice.Even farther as the night wore on…But the next day, it sprung right up again. Amazing little things…

Thanks, Deb … Young saplings like that have lots of spring to them, especially if the temps are not too low. You may remember the shots about three years back, when we had a big one with lots of wind … the cedar tree outside the "unusable" doorway was bent down to the ground, but it's up now … not exactly vertical, but it's up.
