Here are the swan photos I mentioned to Zaphira …

28 Jan

In Zaphira's post "A few birdies …", she showed a swan, and remarked about their beauty and aggression. I mentioned that a pair I found across the road from me in mating season a few years ago had been beautiful, and the male, at least, had exhibited some aggressive behaviour in order to warn me off his lady. I don't doubt that if I had gotten much closer, he would have been provoked to more than scary behaviour. Luckily, I have been able to keep my passion for lady swans under control, to paraphrase the redoutable Porkypine.
Here, I found them, swimming about the pond:

It's obvious that he is beginning to notice me …

He comes a little closer …

And he begins to drum his wings on the water …

And now, HE's closer, and SHE's in the background.

All's well that ends well, I reckon …
Cheers, all …

I have heard that, as well … recent research seems to show that monogamous bird couples tend to cheat, however.

I understand it is the same for geese. As well I believe the surviving partner even goes off to die as well.

The "blue" on those photographs is just so beautiful. I love this shade…not to mention that it is my favorite color 🙂

I suspect that "cheating" is, on a scale of such things, a relatively low-risk activity, in most species. The benefit is, in evolutionary biological terms, a greater mixing of the gene pool, thus providing greater genetic diversity. There is the risk of negative outcomes, of course, but real anti-survival outcomes are relatively rare.
